Blog Post 2 Word

I've had to use MS Word for a majority of my life as a student since junior high. It is the MS app that I have the most familiarity with. I've had to use it to type up reports for labs as well as various writing assignments. I've seen teachers use it in the past to create their syllabus or to create a quick quiz for the class.

I am no stranger to copyright and fair use. Most  classes I have taken have required me to post my work on Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism. Plagiarism is something that has been stressed upon me multiple times as a big no-no in the world of education. Creating your own education materials can be very challenging on top of the fact that you have to keep yourself from crossing the line of what is fair use. Ways to circumvent this issue are things like simply taking the key points from whatever source you are using and then add in the details and fine points yourself or if you have something like a video or presentation that somebody else made that you think would be great for your class reach out to the original creator for permission to use it in your classroom. And no matter what you should always cite or source any outside information you use.

A way to deal with the social issues of implementing technology in the classroom is just having a frank and honest discussion with the class about the various dangers that come from using the internet as well as how cyber bullying can affect people and where people who are being cyber bullied can go for help or guidance. A way to bridge the digital gap is to push for setting up special times where if students do not have access to technology or the internet at home they can come to the school and use the computer lab or laptops ( Though there are cases where your school may not have access to these resources so you may need to reach out to things like local libraries) to do research or work on assignments. And to deal with issues like academic honesty, cheating, and plagiarism you can use things like turnitin.com for the more blatant and easy cases of people copying and pasting information it is harder  and harder to crack down on cheating due to the constant growth of technology and misplaced innovation on the students' part. The best you can do is to be in the know about all the ways students could be using technology to cheat and being on the lookout for it.

  1. Hey Noah, I agree with you when it comes to turnitin.com! It is a great tool for teachers and i feel like it holds students accountable for their work. It is also important for educators to be proactive when it comes to cheating and their studentd.

  2. Hi Noah!
Great blog post this week! Like you, I have used Microsoft Word the same way. As for the copyright issue, you made good points when talking about paraphrasing. That is something I learned when using APA formatting for the first time and the professor would only let us use one quote the whole paper. This makes it easier for people to use their own ideas more. I agree with your way to deal with the digital divide. This way the kids are not falling behind their classmates who have internet at home.
